Moving around Florence by car!


We discourage from the use of cars inside the city, whereas a private vehicle is highly recommended to travel around and visit the surroundings.


ZTL: Limited Traffic Zone
Not the whole city area can be accessed by car. The historic centre is normally prohibited to private vehicles without a valid permit, and access to this area is controlled by automatic gates.
To access the car park in Santa Maria Novella train station there is a specific signalled path to follow. If you are lodged in a hotel within the blue area, it is necessary to inform the hotel staff at time of arrival in order to enter the limited traffic zone.

Car parks
If you plan to drive through Florence by car there are a few things you should be informed about. Free car park is possible exclusively in some suburban areas of the city.  All prohibition signals on the road are valid for the entire length of the road self.
In approaching the historic centre and the larger avenues pay attention to the signals on the asphalt. The white stripes indicate a parking area designated for residents only. The blue stripes indicate a parking area on payment, with variable fare.
In addition to parkings on payment, in Florence there are several car parks managed by the company “Firenze parcheggi”, as well as some private garages.
