Santa Maria del Fiore, receive this name because of its plant the remind a big flower.
The Duomo building was begun in 1296 after the direction of Arnolfo di Cambio. The new cathedral was built around an ancient church dedicated to Santa Reparata (the tradition says that the church was destroyed after the build of the new church).
The build of the cathedral carried on for ages, and the jobs directions passed from Arnolfo di Cambio to Giotto (1334-1336), Francesco Talenti, Lapo and Giovanni Ghini. The dome was Brunelleschi work. The constructions carry on from 1418 to 1434.
The façade was completed in 1887 by Emilio de Fabris following the Arnolfo di Cambio plan, modified by Talenti.
The bell tower shows the alternations of the different artists in the floors building: Giotto (1334), Andrea Pisano (who take the work after Giotto dead) and, at the end Francesco Talenti who finished it in 1359. on the bell tower is possible to admire 16 statues (big as a men) an art works by Andrea Pisano, Donatello e Luca Della Robbia and other artist of 14th an 15th century.
